The best laid plans of mice and men…

Hopefully, that is taken as gender neutral (and species neutral for that matter).

The day started with a simple plan – cab to LGA, fly to Boise, rent 2 bikes, and ride 40 miles to Idaho City. We made it as far as the airport before fate stepped in.

Having Katie along ensures that the details of the day are always captured in eloquent prose and that gives me the luxury to focus on a couple poignant experiences that left me inspired and humbled.
First is our seemingly universal desire to connect, especially over seemingly trivial points. I just recently bought a new pair of Vibram Five Finger shoes, which are distinctive for the articulated toes and minimal amount of ‘protection’. They definitely look unique, so I am not surprised when people take note, but we ended up in a good 20 minute conversation with a hostess in Minneapolis about these shoes (she has had several pairs) which led to discussions on spirituality, travels to India, meditation, and a past stint as a carnival concession worker. It was completely unexpected and quite lovely.

Second relates to karma, and my ongoing effort to ramp up the generosity in my life. I have really been trying to think of ways to impact someone without expecting anything in return (from them, or even the universe at large). In one case, we discovered that a particularly helpful customer service manager has a love of elephants, and I was able to share the limited knowledge I have about Ganesha (“remover of obstacles”) We will be sending her a small token as a gift. In another case, we ended up with food vouchers that we could not use. We asked a waitress to find a worthy recipient, which meant that she got to experience/receive the gratitude from the recipient who was and will always be anonymous to us. I am more and more drawn to the anonymous acts, and today’s experiences have taught/reminded me of the concept of doing something purely for the sake of doing it.

We are now arriving in Boise, where the temp at midnight is above 90. Tomorrow’s ride will be quite interesting. At least we will get a relatively early start as the bike shop has been incredulous supportive.

Onward and upward.
