A kindly beginning

At the outset of this adventure we’ve been ever aware of the kindness of strangers involved in this hair-brained adventure. From Katie’s cousin’s groomsman who practically helped us plan the route; never having met us. The proprietor of our hotel for this evening offered to stock the fridge for us since we’d be biking into town after restaurants were closed for the night. A dear friend was recently injured and loaned her cycling gear to Katie so she could “learn” how to bike; Bill lent a jersey to Katie too (that was before she doused it in perfume…oops); countless teammates have lent support (when they were stifling their chuckles); and family members have come out in full force. Especially Mrs. G. who gave us pepper spray to ward off bears. (Philip: “Does she realize how close we’d have to be to a bear to use pepper spray?!!”)

And today was no exception. A canceled flight means our trip will change a bit–but Francine Bean at the United ticket counter proves nice people still exist…even in airports. A funny trip through the security metal detector: “why do you have metal clips on your shoes?” “why do you have 10 packs of butt’r?” “who are you people?!!”

Two first-class tickets later, we’re settled into the gate lounge– listening to music on portable stereo speakers while charging all 976 electronic devices Philip brought. Lest you roll your eyes and say “of course, they got first-class tickets”–we’re well-aware (or Katie is) that those leather seats will be the last time her tush is comfy for quite some time: our abbreviated schedule likely means lots more mileage tomorrow! Furthermore, in bike gear and flipflops (or vibram’s) we look like the last people you’d let into first class–our labels are Nike, Sugoi and Asics. Well, perhaps clothes don’t make the man after all…something to keep in mind as we continue to find ourselves at the mercy of strangers–and learn over and over that kindness is the ultimate gesture.

Wish I had something clever to contribute, but in this case truth definitely trumps fiction! Vaya con dios! Love from ML
