Haiti Update 2 (cont)

The music here never stops. As one walks down the streets, you can easily peer into the tents, lean-to’s, and many makeshift dwellings along the way to see the most basic of necessities-sleeping surface, a couple pots, some clothes strung over the top drying in the sun. Very few homesites would require more than my small backpack to transport ALL their worldly possessions.

And yet they sing, tap spoons, drum pails, and gather around CD players or car radios. Yesterday was Sunday and a large percentage of the population were gathered in (remnants of) churches so you would here singing coming from all corners.

It is quite a remarkable reminder that even in the most challenging of circumstances (and its hard to imagine anything in our lives back in the US comparing to this situation), that ones outlook is determined by choice and perspective.

With literally their entire worlds collapsed around them, the Haitian people we meet are singing, dancing, laughing. I feel that they have set a very high bar and I am inspired to try and live up to that in my life.

Monday means back to the endless rubble piles. With a smile on my face 🙂
